To date little research has been done on the topic of South Asian women and the leadership challenges they face. The survey, targeting more than 1200 South Asian women, was modeled on a similar survey performed by Catalyst for "Women of Color". The online survey was the first ever large scale survey on South Asian Women living in the United States. Authored by two Harvard Graduate students, the report cites professional challenges faced by South Asian women (SAW) in the United States, as well as the relative importance of leadership skills in order to advance professionally. The top six success factors identified for career advancement included communicating well, performing consistently above expectations, having key professionals relationships, networking, accessing high visibility projects and having an influential mentor. “The results are eye-opening and phenomenal – women are continuously trying to find ways to navigate their careers and break through the glass ceiling. The results focus all of us on simple insights to reach those goals.” -Neeta Verma, Executive Director, Indus Women Leaders. The report also explores the perception of leadership challenges between SAW and other ethnic women groups. Women were asked about resources that would be helpful to advancing their professional career and when asked about the availability of these resources, ninety-six percent of the women said that finding appropriate mentors would be a helpful or very helpful resource; however 41% said they were unavailable. Fifty-nine percent of the surveyed population identified cultural values that inhibit self-promotion as a barrier to career progression. The report also highlights programs and resources that would be helpful to South Asian women in developing leadership skills.
